The Velvet cave was originally part of a prehistoric sea bed. More recently, over the centuries, workers laboured here to cut out blocks of marl for building houses and castles. Now you can follow the lamp of the guide as he leads you through the immense network of passageways. Enjoy the legends, darkness and serene quiet. Look at the strikingly impressive wall paintings, sculptures, secret hiding places and unique 18th-century chapel. The secret escape tunnels and a lost bat will lead you to the castle ruins of the only elevated fortress in the Netherlands. From the vantage point of this fortress, the fortified city below looks like it would fit into the palm of your hand. Wander through the Great Hall, the artillery room and the chapel, before finally catching your breath on our panoramic terrace with a wonderful view of the hill country below.
