Take an exciting voyage of discovery through historic Maastricht. After a warm welcome with hot coffee and sweet flan (vlaai), you will visit the magnificent Basilica of St. Servatius and its treasure rooms – overflowing with tradition, history, religious artefacts and architectural gems. This is where Maastricht guards its most cherished treasures. The most valuable of these is the shrine of St. Servatius, also referred to as the Noodkist (literally: calamity coffin, a reference to the belief that it could help avert or resolve calamities), which contains some of the bones of Saint Servatius, the first Bishop in the Netherlands. Various artefacts and art works are also on display dating back to the sixth century.
A lunch will be served to round out your visit to the basilica. During the afternoon, your VVV guide will again accompany you as you explore the historic city centre. You will stroll along the top of the medieval wall surrounding the city, discover a maze of picturesque streets such as those in the Stokstraat and Jeker districts, and soak up the atmosphere of the city’s historic and beautiful squares, including the Vrijthof and Onze Lieve Vrouweplein squares. You will also visit the caves of the Sint. Pietersberg hill.
