Maastricht

The ambitions are clear: Maastricht as a candidate for the European Capital of Culture in 2018; working together with the rest of the region, because Maastricht shares a rich history and, more importantly, a cultural future with the rest of the region. Get to know the cultural face of Maastricht and her partner cities.

At the Bonnefanten Museum, besides impressive collections of classical paintings and sculptures you will find an internationally-oriented collection of contemporary art. Next door is NAiM/Bureau Europa, Maastricht's own centre of architecture, also well worth a visit. At the Centre Ceramique, contemporary expositions alternate at a rapid pace.

Sittard-Geleen

Together with Geleen, the lovely little city of Sittard forms the heart of what is known as the Westelijke Mijnstreek - the Western Mining Region. The birthplace of beloved late comedian Toon Hermans offers a wealth of monuments and museums, such as Museum Het Domein, with an extraordinary collection of contemporary art and civic history. In 2000, Sittard was declared the Greenest City in the Netherlands.

The bustling city centre, the cafes and their heated terraces offer a pleasant place to relax after a full day’s shopping. Sittard comes alive after dark. The varied nightlife, the city's theatres, and performances and festivals such as the Festival d-VERS on the old market square all contribute to Sittard’s dazzling character.

Heerlen

Schunck is one of Heerlen’s most extraordinary buildings and deserves its nickname of “Window on Culture”. Formerly known as the Glaspaleis (Glass Palace), the building is home to the Vitruvianum Centre for Architecture in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion, as well as the Stadsgalerij Heerlen, the museum for contemporary and modern art. It also houses various other cultural institutions such as the arthouse cinema Filmhouse De Spiegel. Even the location of this cinema is unique – right up on the roof! From here you can enjoy a spectacular view of the entire city.
The newly renovated building of the Parkstad Theater Heerlen, the city theatre, is a feast for the eyes and offers a programme of national and international allure.
